What DepEd and Microsoft announced

On 27 August 2026, Microsoft announced plans to provide Copilot access to one million Filipino public-school teachers. The tool is meant to help teachers plan lessons, personalise support, reduce administrative load and use classroom insights more quickly.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the partnership should help teachers save time and support learning recovery. Microsoft described Copilot as an aid under professional judgment, not a substitute for the teacher.

What is already underway

Earlier in 2026, DepEd and Microsoft ran nationwide Copilot Chat skilling. Microsoft reported more than 175,000 registrations and nearly 75,000 live attendees at the flagship event. DepEd’s National Educators’ Academy of the Philippines later extended asynchronous training for registered participants.

A related Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning literacy pilot used Microsoft Reading Progress and Reading Coach. Microsoft said the 21-week pilot reached 3,431 students across eight regions, analysed 8,381 reading submissions and trained over 2,100 teachers. Of students reassessed in that period, 780 showed reading progress: 319 moved up between Phil-IRI bands, and 461 improved within their existing band. Those figures are organisation-reported.

What the announcement does not prove

A commitment to equip 1 million teachers is not the same as every teacher already having a live Copilot licence today. Microsoft and DepEd did not publish a region-by-region go-live calendar or the exact licence terms for each school in this announcement.

Pilot literacy results cover the students and teachers in that programme. They should not be read as a nationwide reading outcome for all public schools.

What teachers and parents can do

  • Wait for DepEd or school-head instructions before assuming Copilot is already assigned to a specific teacher.
  • Use any approved Copilot access as a draft helper, then check the lesson against the curriculum and school rules.
  • Do not paste student names, grades or private family details into an AI tool unless DepEd guidance allows it.
  • Keep professional judgment in charge: Copilot can draft, but the teacher still decides what is taught.
