Read your Meralco bill line by line
Does your Meralco bill have lines you do not understand, or do you want to check how the total was computed?
Quick answer
Your kWh used is the current meter reading minus the previous reading (Meralco’s example: 3,456 − 3,144 = 312 kWh). Divide each charge line by your kWh to see its effective peso-per-kWh. Add every line and compare the sum with the printed total. Meralco keeps only the Distribution, Supply and Metering group; the rest passes through.
Sample Meralco bill computation worksheet
Copy this worksheet and fill the [brackets] from your own bill. The kWh lines show Meralco’s own meter example; the worked peso example is in the Example section of this guide.
1. kWh used
Meralco's example: 3,456 − 3,144 = 312 kWh
Your bill: [current reading] − [previous reading] = [kWh used]
2. Charge lines (copy each amount from your bill)
Generation [amount] ÷ [kWh used] = [per kWh]
Transmission [amount] ÷ [kWh used] = [per kWh]
System Loss [amount] ÷ [kWh used] = [per kWh]
Distribution, Supply and Metering [amount] ÷ [kWh used] = [per kWh]
Subsidies (Lifeline, Senior Citizen) [amount]
Government Taxes [amount]
Universal Charges, FiT-All, GEA-All [amount]
Any other line [name and amount]
3. Add the lines
[sum of every line] compared with the printed total [total]
If they differ, recheck each amount you copied.
4. Effective cost per kWh
[printed total] ÷ [kWh used] = [effective per kWh]Some lines on a real bill are fixed each month, so dividing them by kWh gives an effective figure, not the published rate. Only Meralco can confirm a billing error.

What you will make
A line-by-line explanation of your own bill, a check that your kWh matches your meter readings, and a short list of things to ask Meralco if the numbers do not add up.
What you need
Your latest Meralco bill, on paper or as a screenshot from the app. Last month's bill helps if you want to compare.
Before you start
Cover or crop out your account number, name, address and any barcode or QR code before you share a photo with AI. The AI only needs the meter readings and the charge lines.
What to do
- Find the current and previous meter readings on your bill. The kWh you used is the current reading minus the previous reading (Meralco's own example: 3,456 − 3,144 = 312 kWh).
- Take a photo or screenshot of the charge lines only, such as Generation, Transmission, System Loss, Distribution, Supply, Metering, subsidies, Government Taxes, Universal Charges and FiT-All. Hide your account details.
- Paste the prompt below into ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, then attach the photo or type the lines into the brackets.
- Check the AI's sum against the total printed on your bill, then compare each line with last month's bill to see which one changed.
Try this prompt
Type the readings and charge lines exactly as printed. Leave out your account number, name and address.
Help me read my Meralco electricity bill line by line. Use only the numbers I give you. Do not guess Meralco's current rates.
MY BILL (account number, name, address and barcode removed)
Billing period: [FROM – TO]
Current meter reading: [NUMBER]
Previous meter reading: [NUMBER]
kWh printed on the bill: [NUMBER]
Charge lines exactly as printed, name and amount:
[e.g. Generation ₱____ / Transmission ₱____ / System Loss ₱____ / Distribution ₱____ / Supply ₱____ / Metering ₱____ / Lifeline Subsidy ₱____ / Senior Citizen Subsidy ₱____ / Government Taxes ₱____ / Universal Charges ₱____ / FiT-All ₱____ / any other line]
Total current bill printed: ₱[AMOUNT]
Last month's kWh and total: [kWh / ₱ / NONE]
DO
1. Check the kWh: current reading minus previous reading. Say whether it matches the kWh printed. If my bill shows a multiplier, ask me for it instead of guessing.
2. Explain each line in one plain sentence, using these meanings from Meralco: Generation = power bought from suppliers. Transmission = delivering power from power plants to Meralco over the national grid. System Loss = power lost on the way, capped by the Energy Regulatory Commission. Distribution, Supply and Metering = Meralco's own charges for its network, customer service, metering and billing. Subsidies = the Lifeline and Senior Citizen programs. Government Taxes = VAT, energy tax, real property tax and local franchise tax. Universal Charges, FiT-All and GEA-All = government-mandated charges collected for national programs. If a line is not in this list, say you are not sure what it is.
3. For each line, show amount ÷ kWh = pesos per kWh. Call it "effective per kWh", because some lines may be fixed each month.
4. Add all the lines and compare the sum with the printed total. Show the addition. If it does not match, list the numbers I should recheck.
5. If I gave last month's figures, say which lines changed the most.
OUTPUT
A table: line | amount | effective per kWh | what it means.
Then: the kWh check, the total check, the biggest changes, and up to 3 questions I could ask Meralco.
Do not tell me my bill is wrong. Tell me what to verify.See a sample result
Illustrative example. Your answer may differ.
Made-up amounts to show the math, not current Meralco rates. kWh used: 3,456 − 3,144 = 312 kWh (Meralco's own meter example). Generation ₱1,872.00 ÷ 312 = ₱6.00 per kWh. Transmission ₱249.60, System Loss ₱156.00, Distribution, Supply and Metering ₱436.80, other charges ₱312.00. Sum: ₱3,026.40, which matches the printed total. Effective cost: ₱3,026.40 ÷ 312 = ₱9.70 per kWh.
Before you use it: Make sure the AI's sum matches the total printed on your bill and that it used your own readings. If something still looks wrong, recheck what you typed first. Only Meralco can confirm a billing error, so ask them through their official channels.
Try this follow-up
Ask: "Which line went up the most since last month, and was that because I used more kWh or because the amount per kWh went up?"
If the answer is not right
If the AI uses a rate or a line that is not on your bill, point to it and say: "Use only the numbers I gave you." If the photo is hard to read, type the lines instead.
Philippine notes
- Meralco says most of the bill is pass-through charges that do not go to Meralco: generation, transmission, system loss, taxes, subsidies and universal charges. Its own share is the Distribution, Supply and Metering group.
- Meralco lists a Lifeline discount for qualified 4Ps and certified-marginalized customers with low use, and a Senior Citizen discount for qualified seniors using up to 100 kWh a month. Ask Meralco how to apply.
- Electric cooperative bills use their own line names and rates. Check your cooperative's bill guide before using these meanings.
