Requirement: Google Home (a smart home)

This lesson does not work on a normal light switch. Gemini can only control devices that are already in the Google Home app on the same personal Google account — for example a smart bulb, smart plug, smart fan, AC, TV or speaker that you already added there.

If you open Google Home and you see no devices, skip this page. Set the devices up in Google Home first, or use another lesson such as a photo or a YouTube link.

This is the Gemini phone app talking to Google Home. It is not Gemini on a Nest speaker. Google’s speaker “Gemini for Home” early access still does not list the Philippines.

Google says home controls are for convenience, not for anything that could cause harm if it fails. Gemini will not unlock a door for you.

What you need

• At least one smart home device already working in Google Home.
• An Android phone with the official Gemini app.
• The same personal Google account in Gemini and in Google Home. Work or school accounts cannot connect Home for now.
• Keep Activity turned on in Gemini. If it is off, Home will not connect.
• Voice: English works for “Hey Google.” Some languages, including some Filipino setups, do not support Hey Google. If voice fails, type the request.

Try this

1. Open Google Home and confirm you can already turn the device on from that app. If you cannot, stop here.
2. Open the Gemini app. Sign in with the same personal account.
3. Type or say: turn on living room lights (use the room or device name from your Google Home app).
4. The first time, Gemini should offer to connect Google Home. Follow the on-screen steps.
5. If it does not connect, add @Google Home to the message, for example: @Google Home turn off the bedroom TV.
6. Watch the real device. If nothing happens, open Google Home and control it there.

Things you can ask

Use the names already in Google Home:

• Turn off all the lights.
• Set the living room lights to 50%.
• Turn on the fan.
• Turn off the bedroom TV.
• Help me clean up the kitchen (starts a vacuum if you have one linked).

You can also say Hey Google on the phone if Voice Match is on, then the same request.

What it will not do

• Unlock doors or other security actions that need a PIN. Gemini opens Google Home instead.
• Add or delete devices. Do that in the Google Home app.
• Work in the Gemini website, Gemini in Messages, or Gemini Live chats.
• Replace a Nest speaker assistant in the Philippines until Google lists this country.

Before you rely on it

• Stand where you can see the light or hear the TV. Confirm it actually changed.
• Do not use this for a stove, iron or anything unsafe if the command fails.
• Household members who share the Google Home can be affected by your command.
